I found this cartoon today and it really got me thinking:
What if we did kick out all the immigrants that originated here. I wouldn't be here that's for sure. My great grandparents were Irish Catholic immigrants that came to New York to start a better life. That's what makes America so great, right? The fact that we have opportunity, freedom and offer an ideal that many countries cannot. I think instead of just deporting immigrants, like Arizona has done (shame AZ), we need to make becoming a legal citizen not such a lengthy, expensive and complicated process. If a person is willing to work hard in our country, I say why not let them as long as they pay their share of taxes. Because becoming a legal citizen can seem almost more scary than illegally crossing the boarder, many illegal aliens end up costing us millions in health and education bills. What other nation allows someone to have a child in their country be an automatic citizen by birth? We need to reform our whole understanding of this immigration issue. Offer help to the countries so that their citizens will have more incentive to live in their countries of birth. But also, we cannot turn away what is the inevitable. America is a mixing pot with many languages and cultures and our Founding Fathers made it that way for a reason. If the Indians had kicked us out when we tried to immigrate what do you think we would have done...I'll tell you, we would have killed them either way, just like we did anyway. Do you think they asked us to take reading tests in their language or know Indian history to become citizens?! No, small pox was our passport to a great new world. Let's think over this issue a little harder (Arizona) before we begin kicking people out of our countries who have been here for years and have established families, friends and a home. It just makes me sad.
